Modi neglected diamond industry, says Congress

Ahmedabad, Dec 26 (IANS) The Congress party Friday accused Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi of not taking enough measures to help the crisis-stricken diamond industry of the state.

For four months the workers of diamond units were on the street crying for succour. Instead of coming out with a financial package to help them, the government is browbeating them, Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) chief Siddharth Patel said here.

He added that 18 percent of the two-million diamond workers in the country are from Gujarat and they must be helped immediately.

“This is a daunting crisis as diamond and jewellery units are badly hit by global slowdown,” Patel said.

He added that the month-long ‘Abhay Udaan-Mera Bharat Mahaan’ programme, being organised by the GPCC to mobile people across the state, would be launched Dec 28 in seven major cities – Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Surat, Jamnagar, Junagadh, Bhavnagar and Vadodara.

A series of events, including debates on peace, communal harmony, patriotism and nationalism, will be organised under the programme, which will come to an end Jan 26.
