New Delhi : The Samajwadi Party Friday demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the death of a government engineer who was allegedly killed by a ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) legislator in Uttar Pradesh.
The Samajwadi Party held a parliamentary board meeting in the national capital Friday and passed a resolution demanding the CBI inquiry. Public Works Department (PWD) engineer M.K. Gupta was allegedly killed by BSP legislator Shekhar Tiwari and his henchmen Wednesday for refusing to contribute Rs.5 million (Rs.50 lakh) for Chief Minister Mayawati’s birthday bash.
“To expect justice from any of the investigative agencies working under the Uttar Pradesh government led by Mayawati would be wrong. Hence, the best option is a CBI inquiry,” Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav told reporters here.
Mulayam Singh said the state has become a province of criminals under Mayawati and the BSP is their den.
“At least 23 ministers in state government have criminal records against them,” Singh added.
Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh is also likely to meet President Pratibha Patil and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Friday to seek their intervention in the matter.
“The birthday celebrations of Mayawati have become a method of extorting money. We seek a judicial inquiry from the central government into the functions being held on Mayawati’s birthday,” Amar Singh said.
On the issue of seat sharing with the Congress party in Uttar Pradesh ahead of Lok Sabha elections, Amar Singh said: “We are likely to meet Congress president Sonia Gandhi, her political advisor Ahmed Patel and general secretary Rahul Gandhi to arrive on a decision on seat sharing in the state.”
