In a message to the nation on the first death anniversary of Bhutto, Zardari said “the tyrants and the killers have killed her but they shall never be able to kill her ideas that drove and inspired a generation to lofty aims.”

“Benazir Bhutto will always be remembered as the leader who gave voice to the muted turbulence of the spirit of a vanquished people,” said the message.

“She gave voice to the voiceless, strength to the weak and motivation to the people to strive for a goal higher than life,” Zardari said in the message.

Zardari pointed out that the attack on Bhutto was actually an attack on the viability of the state and for undermining the efforts to build democratic structures for fighting militancy. He urged democratic forces to rededicate themselves to fighting militancy and extremism by strengthening democratic institutions.

Tens of thousands of people are rushing to Bhutto’s graveyard in Sindh province to commemorate her first death anniversary.

Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in gunshot and suicide bombing attacks on Dec. 27, 2007 when she went out of a park in Rawalpindi where she addressed an election rally.
