The Bhutan-bound tanker caught fire when its driver and helper had gone for a meal.

Jitendra Nath Roy, an official of the Siliguri Motor Driver and Transport Workers Union, said the tanker caught fire when some miscreants were pilfering petrol from the vehicle.

“Someone apparently lit a cigarette and that led to the mishap,” he added.

Five fire tenders were rushed to control the fire. No one has been reported injured in the incident.

The driver and the helper are absconding.
