Kwong Man-fong, 43, purloined biscuits, beer, mineral water, wine, chocolates, a sewing kit, pens, instant noodles and shaving cream on the Cathay Pacific flight from Auckland to Hong Kong July 27.

Two junior colleagues spotted Kwong, who had worked for the Hong Kong airline for 23 years, and reported her to the captain. She resigned and was prosecuted for theft by the airline.

Kwong claimed she had stolen the items – worth a total of around $130 – while suffering from exhaustion because of the effects of medication, and had not slept in 33 hours. She pleaded guilty to theft.

At a sentencing hearing Tuesday, Kwong was ordered to do 210 hours of community service by a magistrate who said she should not be jailed because she did not plan the theft and the value of the items was low.
