Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan made an announcement to the effect on December 30, the last day of the winter session of state legislative assembly. The committee has been formed to probe security lapses from every aspect in Mumbai terror attack and that it would fix responsibilities on the culprits. The committee will also recommend suggestions to check the recurrence of such terror attacks.

The decision of forming the committee was taken soon after the winter session started on December 15. The decision followed the promise of the state government that it would have the 26/11 terror attack investigated by a high-level panel.

The panel will be headed by R D Pradhan, former Arunachal Pradesh governor and Union home secretary in the Rajiv Gandhi-led government. The other member of the committee will be former IPS officer V Balachandran who had been also a special secretary for the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW).

Asked whether the committee would question DGP A N Roy and Mumbai Police Commissioner Hasan Ghafoor Chavan did not give any clear answer and said the committee was given full authority to enquire anyone.

The panel will submit its report in two months.
