When the theft was initially discovered, Principal Meenakshikutty Amma at the Model Residential School in Pynavu in the state of Kerala asked for the culprit to come forward and confess, but no one admitted the offense.

Indian news portal Newindpress said the principal, who says she has never physically punished a student in her 28-year teaching career, was “upset that one of her beloved students was a thief,” and decided to punish herself.

She summoned senior pupils and said she would cane herself until the thief owned up. Eventually the culprit came forward.

“I knew well that the boy would confess,” Newindpress quoted Amma as saying.

“I love my students like my own children. I was sure that they have regards for me,” she said.
