Iran interested in getting nuclear reactors from India

By NNN-IRNA

New Delhi : As India has acquired the capability to produce viable commercial nuclear reactors with power generation capacities of 220 MW and 540 MW, some countries are interested in getting nuclear reactors from India, it was announced here Thursday.

Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Anil Kakodkar made the remarks while talking to reporters at the Koodankulam Nuclear power plant site near Tirunelveli, sixth largest city of Tamil Nadu state in southern India.

He was speaking on the sidelines of floating and towing of caisson, a mammoth concrete structure used for bringing water required for cooling reactors, in the sea around 1.2 km from the shore.

To another query, he said the nuclear power sector could be opened up to private players. However, as per the existing rules, the government should have 51 per cent stake in any such project, he said adding the nuclear projects were also very expensive.

He also said the draft of the Indo-French civilian nuclear deal had been finalised. He said India was also in the process of discussing similar deals with various countries.
