Youth held for attacking CPI-M office

Kannur (Kerala) :A youth was arrested Saturday in connection with an armed attack on a Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) office near here in which six party workers were injured.

The arrested youth, K. Ubais, 25, is said to be an activist of the National Democratic Front (NDF), a militant Muslim outfit.

A group of about a dozen people armed with swords came in vehicles and attacked the CPI-M activists who were watching television in the party’s branch committee office at Arolil Friday midnight.

The condition of the two of the injured was said to be critical. The CPI-M blamed the NDF for carrying out the attack.

Kannur district, about 500 km north of Thiruvananthapuram, has been a hotbed of political violence for the last three decades.

A CPI-M activist was murdered in Thalassery in the district Jan 27. The party had accused the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) was behind the murder.

Following this incident, the Left Front government made changes in the police administration shifting the district police superintendent.
