Firing on Bhutto rally wounds 7 in Karachi

Islamabad : More than seven persons including five policemen and a child were wounded when unknown persons fired at a political rally, held to condemn the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, said police.

The incident took place in Liyari area of Pakistans Southern Karachi port city when more than five hundred supporters were holding rally in support of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and to condemn the killing of Benazir Bhutto.

Police sources told KUNA that unknown armed assailant opened fire at the rally that caused stampede.

They said the target was a police mobile. They added that more than seven persons were wounded including five policemen and a child of age between 10 and 12.

It was not immediately clear who the assailants were. Police said that security has been put on high alert ahead of Benazir Bhuttos Chehlum, a religious rite observed after forty days of the deceased.

Also, security has been given red alert in interior Sindh and Punjab provinces and heavy police deployment made around important buildings and government offices.
