Patna : Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Thursday criticised Delhi Lt Governor Tejender Khanna for his remarks that people of north India take “pride in violating law”.
“North Indians or Biharis hardly need certificate from anybody on violating the law. They are hardworking people, earning their livelihood by doing hard labour,” Nitish Kumar told reporters here.
At an event of traffic police in New Delhi, Khanna said: “In this region (north India), people take pride in violating the law. But people in south India naturally stay within the limits of the law.” His office later clarified that his statement was distorted by the media.
Nitish Kumar said it should be made clear to all that north Indians or Biharis “are earning by hard work, nobody is giving them anything in charity.”
Without naming Khanna, he said people holding constitutional posts should not make remarks against a section of people as it will set a wrong trend and send a wrong message.
Lalu Prasad, chief of Bihar’s main opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), also noted that those holding constitutional posts should refrain from giving such statements.
Khanna had Jan 4 announced a plan making it compulsory for all people in Delhi to carry proof of identity and of residence all the time in the light of increased terror threat in the capital. As the move would have hit migrant workers many of whom are from Bihar, Nitish Kumar had strongly objected to the plan.
Khanna had later clarified and said he was “misreported” by the media.
