Patna : Angry farmers in Bihar’s Nalanda district Friday demanded more compensation for their lands acquired to set up the Nalanda International University, and pelted stones at Chief Minister Nitish Kumar when he tried to pacify them.
The farmers gave vent to their demand and anger at what they consider low compensation during former president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s visit to the site.
A district official in Nalanda said the protesters pelted stones at Nitish Kumar when he tried to pacify them. The police wielded the baton to disperse the crowd. “Both Kalam and Nitish Kumar left the site safely,” police sources said.
The Bihar government has acquired 446 acres of land at Rajgir near Nalanda to set up the university. Government officials claimed that the farmers had been paid compensation, but they were demanding more money.
