The kidney scam trail in Nepal

Kathmandu : The alleged mastermind of India’s massive illegal kidney transplant scam, Amit Kumar alias Santosh Rameshwar Raut, who was brought here for questioning Friday, had stopped over here on Dec 30 last year on his way back from Canada.

The following is his Nepal trail:

* Dec 30, 2007: Amit Kumar makes a stopover at Kathmandu from Canada. He boards an Etihaad flight from Dubai and arrives in Kathmandu to look for a new kidney transplant centre.

* Dec 31, 2007: Returns to India through the Sunauli border.

* Jan 26, 2008: Returns to Kathmandu, looking for a place where he can hide after the kidney scam is busted. From Nepal, he plans to escape to Canada and has an air ticket ready.

* Feb 5, 2008: Realising that the Indian media is hot on his trail, Amit Kumar hastily leaves the five-star Radisson Hotel, hires a taxi and heads for Chitwan district in south Nepal, from where he could have slipped out again. Checks into the Wildlife Resort in Chitwan.

* Feb 5-6, 2008: Informers alert police, who email the hotel his photograph for identification. Hotel staff makes positive identification.

* Feb 7: Team rushes to Chitwan arrest Amit Kumar.

* Feb 8: ‘Dr Horror’ put in police custody in Kathmandu.
