Bhubaneswar : A group of Maoist insurgents attacked members of the special operation group (SOG) Friday in a forest in Orissa’s Gajapati district, police said.
A group of ten to 15 Maoist guerrillas attacked about 20 SOG members in Khichilingi forest, nearly 60 km from the district headquarters of Pralakhemundi and 350 km from the capital, district police chief Satyabrata Bhoi told IANS.
The Maoists opened fire on the SOG members who were returning home from duty, he said. The securitymen retaliated and the shootout continued for about half-an-hour after which the Maoists fled to the forest, he said.
There were no injuries reported from either side. On Saturday, police seized a locally made gun from the spot. Maoists are active in 11 of the 30 districts of Orissa.
