Gurgaon : Saraj Kumar, an anaesthetist and a key associate of kidney racket kingpin Amit Kumar, surrendered before a city court Monday after eluding the police for more than two weeks. He was sent to a day’s judicial custody.
According to police, Saraj Kumar surrendered before Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Ranjana Aggarwal Monday afternoon.
“He told the judge he was innocent and had done nothing wrong. He was sent to jail for a day. He will be produced before the judge Tuesday,” a senior police official said.
Saraj was missing since Jan 24, when Haryana and Uttar Pradesh police in a joint raid on a private hospital and a guesthouse in Gurgaon busted the multi-billion rupee kidney racket.
At that time, only Upendra Aggarwal, an associate of Amit Kumar, was nabbed.
Amit Kumar was arrested from a hotel near the Indo-Nepal border on Thursday and handed over to Indian authorities on Saturday. On Sunday, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) produced him before a Delhi magistrate and he was sent to custody till Feb 22.
India’s elite investigating agency has also sent out teams to arrest Jeewan, Amit Kumar’s brother, and other associates who are absconding.
Meanwhile, a city court permitted the CBI to take custody of Upendra, who is presently in a Moradabad jail.
The CBI will seek Saraj Kumar’s custody for the investigation.
