Dubai : Internet services in the UAE were restored Monday after three damaged undersea cables were repaired.
UAE’s leading telecom and Internet service provider Etisalat announced complete restoration of Internet links and start of normal Internet traffic.
The announcement came following confirmation from its international providers Flag Telecom, a part of India’s Reliance Communications, and Sea-ME-We-4, that the cables that were damaged last month and early this month had been repaired.
In a message posted on its website, Flag stated that the Flag Europe Asia cable section between Alexandria in Egypt and Palermo in Italy was repaired Feb 9, a day ahead of schedule.
The cable cut was reported Jan 30 around eight km from the Alexandria coast.
The crew completed repair work on the second cable, Falcon, which was reported damaged on the UAE-Oman segment Feb 1.
Sea-ME-We-4 also confirmed Monday that it has completed repair work on its cable, which was also reported damaged Jan 30 off the Alexandria coast.
In its statement, Etisalat stated it was successful in prioritising Internet traffic and essential services to customers to ensure that they continued to operate with minimal or no impact.
It claimed that its business customers reported negligible disruption in their operations during the period of cable disruption, according to the Emirates News Agency (WAM).
