Pebble Beach (California) : Fijian golfer Vijay Singh lost to American Steve Lowery in the first play-off hole on the final day of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am tournament here.
After the fourth round Sunday, both the golfers were tied first with a tally of 10 under par 278 each at the Pebble Beach golf course. Vijay shot a one-under par 71 while Lowery had a decent four under par 68 in the final round of the $6 million USPGA Tour event.
With both the players tied, the play-off was held on the par-5 18th hole, which Lowery won with a birdie while Vijay parred.
Vijay, who was the overnight leader, could have managed a win but four bogeys on the back nine dragged the match into the play-off. He had a flawless front nine with birdies on the second, fourth sixth and nine. But he wasn’t that lucky on the back nine, as he bogeyed the 10th, 14th, 15th and 16th. He birdied the 18th but it was too late.
Lowery, who came three shots behind Vijay in the final round, pocketed the winners purse of $ 1.1 million.
Indo-Swede Daniel Chopra failed to make the cut.
