US tightens sanctions against Syria

By Xinhua

Washington : US President George W. Bush has announced that his government is beefing up sanctions against Syria accusing it of destabilising neighbouring Iraq and Lebanon.

“I wish to emphasise my concern over the destabilising role Syria continues to play in Lebanon, including its efforts to obstruct the country’s democratic processes through intimidation and violence,” Bush said Wednesday.

Bush announced his decision to freeze additional Syrian assets in an executive order and a message to the US congress.

US National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe said in a statement that the Bush administration would “soon” have a list of officials targeted under the order.

“While the Syrian government has taken some steps against terrorists to ensure internal stability, Syria remains the primary route for terrorists crossing into Iraq,” Johndroe said.

“There are many verifiable actions Syria could take in this regard (such as strengthening its visa requirements) that would demonstrate a willingness to assist the efforts of the Iraqi government and the international community to stabilise Iraq,” the spokesman said.
