The convoy came under attack at Mamund area of Bajur tribal region, bordering Afghanistan, they said.

Three other soldiers from the Bajur Scouts were injured when a roadside bomb was detonated through a remote control.

The fresh attacks came as troops were deployed in sensitive parts of Pakistan few days ahead of parliamentary elections.

Elections are set for February 18 and the Election Commission has postponed elections in the South Waziristan tribal region because of security situation.

Bomb blasts and suicide attacks against security forces have recently increased in the country mostly in the tribal regions and parts of northwest.

Officials said that the landmine blast destroyed one vehicle, killing major Farhan and two other soldiers.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack but such attacks are blamed on Taliban-linked militants.

The convoy came under attack as the troops were returning from the night shift duty at the restive Bajur area.

Taliban-linked militants are active in Bajur, where a US missile strike killed around 80 students in 2006.
