Thiruvananthapuram : Traffic ground to a halt here as Congress president and United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi arrived here Friday on a day’s visit.

Barricades were put on some roads and police diverted traffic at several places, leading to traffic jams in busy areas.

Gandhi, who arrived Thursday evening at Kochi, flew into the state capital Friday morning by a special air force plane. She was accompanied by Defence Minister A.K. Antony.

Her first programme for the day is to lay the foundation stone for a private research foundation, followed by inauguration of the new building of the Women’s Centre of the Church of South India and the new office of the district Congress committee.

She will also visit the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology, recently taken over by the central government.

After meeting state party leaders at the governor’s residence, Gandhi will address a public meeting at the Central Stadium and then return to New Delhi.
