Investigation into Benazir Bhutto murder completes

RAWALPINDI, Feb. 17 (APP): Head of joint investigating team into the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto Ch. Abdul Majeed said here on Sunday that inquiry into killing of former prime minister has been completed as the five suspects arrested in this regard have confessed their crime. Additional Inspector General CID Punjab Ch. Abdul Majeed said this, while addressing a press conference here. City Police Officer, DIG Syed Saud Aziz was also present on the occasion.

The head of investigating team revealed that during the probe it was learnt that Baitullah Mahsood had given Rs. 400,000 to Qari Ismail, who sent five miscreants to Rawalpindi for killing Benazir Bhutto. He said they had planned to target Benazir Bhutto in different cities, until she was assassinated.

AIG Abdul Majeed said that Abdul Rashid involved in Benazir Bhutto’s killing was also the mastermind to fire a missile on the Aeronautical Complex Kamra.

Benazir Bhutto was killed on December 27 at Liaquat Bagh in a suicide attack, when she was coming out after addressing a rally.

Majeed said a joint investigation team headed by him was constituted by the government of Punjab to probe into the assassination of the former prime minister.

Giving details about the developments into the investigation, he said when the investigating team started probing into the case, initially two suspects—Aitezaz Shah and Sher Zaman—were arrested from D I Khan, whereas two more suspects—Hasnain Gul and Rafaqat—were arrested from Rawalpindi and later another killer Abdul Rashid was arrested.

Head of the investigating team said that first of all Aitezaz Shah disclosed important information regarding killing of Benazir Bhutto. The police had obtained physical remand and broadened the investigation to unearth the actual culprits, he added.

He disclosed that Aitezaz had obtained Jihadi training from a Madrasa in Karachi.

After being brain washed and trained, Aitezaz was sent to Waziristan and later he reached Aakora Khatak center.

Aitezaz shah was given the target to kill Benazir Bhutto, he said adding there were some 30 to 35 suicide attackers present at the Wali Muhammad Markaz, who were trained to conduct suicide attacks.

AIG Majeed said, Baitullah Mahsood had provided Rs. 50,000, a suicide attack jacket and other necessary items to someone else, but he could not attack on Benazir Bhutto.

Giving furher details into the planning of the miscreants to attack and kill PPP Chairperson, he said after failure in Karachi and other places to murder Benazir Bhutto, Baitullah Mahsood assigned Qari Ismail of Aakora Khatak and gave him Rs. 400,000 for the implementation of the plan.
