Tension in Pakistan on Eve of Elections

Islamabad : Mounting tension, fear and extreme security measures characterize the situation in Pakistan today, on the eve of general elections on Monday.

The spiral of violence that has plunged this Southeastern Asian Muslim country into mourning, where 42 people were killed and 90 were wounded in a suicide attack on the office of a candidate for the Pakistani Popular Party (PPP) in Parachinar.

The government has deployed thousands of soldiers, who are backing up police officers patrolling 90,000 hotspots, in an effort to guarantee security during the elections.

Pakistanis will elect the deputies to Parliament and the Assemblies in four provinces.

However, Saturday”s attack has deepened the sentiment of insecurity, uncertainty and fear among the people.

In Lahore, which is considered Pakistan”s political barometer, apprehension prevented the regular meetings of PPP leaders and of the opposition Pakistani Muslim League (PML-N).
