FAO Assistant Director James Butler made the plea at a scientific and technological assistance meeting of the Biological Diversity Covenant in Rome.

Butler recalled that 40 percent of land areas are used for agriculture and therefore suitable management of production will improve survival and protect biodiversity.

The FAO official said that understanding the positive connection between those two sectors is fundamental to achieve the universal right to food and sustainable development.
