Troopers of 2 Para regiment of the Indian Army and special operations group (SOG) of police jointly surrounded a forest near Batnar, 100 km from here, in the border district of Kupwara, said a police spokesman.

“As the troopers were busy searching the area, they came under heavy fire from the militants. The fire was returned and in the ensuing gunfight three top militants of JeM were killed,” the spokesman told IANS.

“Bodies of the slain militants have been recovered and efforts are on to ascertain their nationalities.”

Meanwhile the police during a routine search operation have arrested a constable of paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and recovered from him an improvised explosive device (IED) and a hand grenade.
