Kolkata : At least four people were injured when a criminal, being chased by the police, fired indiscriminately in the neighbourhood of West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee Sunday.
The incident took place on Broad Street in south Kolkata, just a few netres from Bhattacharjee’s residence. The criminal, Mohammed Aslam, was later arrested.
“The criminal was chased by personnel of the General Railway Police (GRP) as they found him engaged in unlawful activities in a railway yard. Aslam started running and fired randomly at the policemen. Four people, including a woman, were injured in the firing,” said Rajesh Suborno, Kolkata deputy commissioner of police (south division).
The four injured were identified as Anita Basu, a schoolteacher, Prallad Chowrasia, Prakash and Manoj Gupta. They were admitted to a hospital.
“When Aslam entered the Broad Street area, local people caught him and informed the police,” Suborno said.
The police said Aslam was on the run for a long time and has several criminal charges pending against him for his illegal activities in Tiljala, Topsia and Karya police station areas in the southern fringes of the city.
