Girl abandoned by parents yet to find shelter

Bikaner : Sonu, a 12-year-old girl abandoned by her parents at the railway station of this Rajasthan town Feb 17, is yet to find shelter.

Sonu was left behind as her parents went home to Bihar on a train, despite her tearful pleas to take her along with them.

A Good Samaritan had taken her from the railway station to his home and then informed the authorities.

“Two-three persons had approached us offering to give her shelter. But they failed to fulfil the required legal formalities,” Adarsh Sharma, member Bal Kalyan Samiti said.

She is now staying in Nari Niketan, a state-run women’s home here.

“We have so far not been able to find her parents. We are trying to search for them. The problem is the girl knows the name of her parents and knows the area too. But she is not able to give us the exact name and location of the village,” a police official told IANS.

Sonu, a resident of Khetwali area in Bihar, did not realise that she was going to be abandoned when her parents told her they were going to visit Rajasthan.

“First I was taken to Ramdevra shrine near Pokhran in Jaisalmer district for prayers. Then my parents brought me to a temple in Bikaner. But at the railway station they told me that I would have to live here on my own,” Sonu said with tears in her eyes.

“I pleaded again and again. I cried. But nothing stopped them from travelling back on the train,” Sonu said.

“They did not even think about where I would live and what would I do in this unknown city.

“I do not want to go back to my parents,” the girl said.

“My mother used to beat me regularly and my father never used to stand up for me,” she added.
