Lucknow: Muslim organizations have decided to provide legal assistance to terror suspects, mostly innocent Muslim youths, in Uttar Pradesh.

They have set up Atankwad Virodhi Andolan (AVA) to evolve a system through which legal aid can be provided to terror suspects who had been refused assistance by the Bar Associations in the state. In the wake of the serial blasts in court premises in Faizabad, Varanasi and Lucknow, lawyers had decided not to fight the case of the terror suspects.

AVA’s legal wing will convene a meeting of Muslim advocates on 16th March to discuss the issue.

Why Muslim organizations decided to form a committee for the purpose is not difficult to understand. Of late, it has been observed that in the name of terrorism, community members are becoming victims of police atrocities.

AVA that is headed by prominent Muslim lawyer Zafaryab Jilani came into existence after some prominent Muslim leaders — including Maulana Mohammad Rabey Hasani Nadwi, chairman of All India Muslim Personal Law Board, Maulana Jalaluddin Omri, national president of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind. The AVA has a 12-member executive committee and a 35-member working committee.
