Railways to begin building freight corridors this year

New Delhi : Construction on the dedicated eastern and western freight corridors will start in the upcoming fiscal, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad announced while presenting the Railway Budget 2008-09 in the Lok Sabha Tuesday.

“The works on the eastern freight corridor from Ludhiana (Punjab) to Dankuni, situated near Kolkata (West Bengal), and the Western corridor from Delhi to JNPT (Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, Maharashtra) have been sanctioned,” Lalu Prasad said while presenting his fifth Railway Budget.

“Construction work on both these projects will commence in 2008-09,” he added.

He also said feasibility studies are currently being undertaken for the north-south, east-west, east-south and south-south dedicated freight corridors.

The process of construction these corridors would be accelerated in 2008-09.
