Sharan faces Navdeep in Futures tennis

New Delhi : India’s Rohan Gajjar scored an upset victory over fifth seed Matteo Volante of Italy, while Divij Sharan easily outclassed qualifier Huai-En Chang of Chinese Taipei in the first round of the $15,000 International Tennis Federation (ITF) Futures F2 tournament here Tuesday.

Gajjar prevailed over Volante in a hard-fought three-setter 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 6-3, while Sharan overpowered Huai-En 6-4, 6-4 on the second day of the event.

Sharan will Wednesday face Navdeep Singh, who upset top seed Kyu-Tae of Korea in the opening round Monday.

Another young Indian Purav Raja was no match for fourth seed Enov Todor of Bulgaria, losing out 6-4, 6-4 in the opening round.

In the doubles event, third seed pair of Vivek Shokken and Ashutosh Singh of India powered their way into the second round with a 6-1, 6-4 win over German-Italian duo of Volante and Alexander Satschko. They will next meet compatriots Vinod Sridhar and Vishnu Vardhan.
