New Delhi : Two people, including a Jammu resident, have been arrested for allegedly selling opium poppy straw in the national capital and nearly 100 kg of the banned substance has been seized from them, the police said Tuesday.

Bashir Ahmed, a 33-year-old from Jammu, and Ravinder Narayan, 22, of Bihar, were arrested on the Ring Road near Gurudwara Majnu Ka Tila in northeast Delhi Monday evening. The police recovered 95.5 kg of poppy straw concealed in four gunny bags in their Maruti car.

The police said the duo was supposed to distribute the drugs to their clients in the city.

“Ahmed, in his interrogation, disclosed that he came from Jammu some time ago and worked as a driver and drove buses on contract. During this period he came to know some drivers and conductors who consumed opium,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Alok Kumar said.

“Bashir got in touch with Narayan and one Shahid. Through them, he got to know one Pappu, who supplied poppy straw to drivers. To earn fast money Bashir, Pappu, Ravi and Shahid formed a gang in 2007 and procured poppy straw from Gwalior in large quantities,” Kumar added.

The police said the gang used to obtain the contraband for Rs.500 per kg and sold it to drivers, conductors and roadways staffs making profit of Rs.2,000 per kg.
