‘Independent agency should probe root of terrorism’

New Delhi : An independent all-religion agency should be set up to probe the reasons that spur individuals to become terrorists, the president of the India Islamic Cultural Center said here Wednesday.

“The security agencies declare so and so individual as terrorist but we never come to know the basic reasons for killing hundreds of people,” Sirajuddin Qureshi told reporters.

He believed that a person usually becomes a terrorist due to a certain sense of injustice and deprivation.

“Either he has seen his mother or sister being raped; brother or father being killed. Or he has been kept out of society,” Qureshi said.

Such a person has revenge on top of his mind and looks at everyone as an enemy, he said, stressing that “we need to know why they become terrorists”.

An independent agency supported by the government and members from all religions should be set up for this purpose, he suggested.

“We read in media that innocent Muslims are being picked up after a terrorist attack and this body should enquire into these cases,” Qureshi said.

He, however, condemned terrorism of all kinds and said terrorists have no religion. Qureshi’s suggestion comes two days after the Darul Uloom Deoband, India’s best known and oldest seminary, condemned terrorism as un-Islamic.
