A US Marshal told Radio New Zealand that Xue, 54, was detained in Atlanta and would be held pending deportation to New Zealand to face trial.

Qian Xun Xue – dubbed “Pumpkin” by the media for the clothes she wore – was caught on closed-circuit television cameras when she was found wandering at Melbourne railway station after being abandoned by her father.

The body of her mother, Anan Liu, 27, was found soon after in the boot of a car in Auckland, where the family lived.

New Zealand and Australian authorities said that Xue had flown to Los Angeles after leaving the child, and US law enforcement officers have been tracking him since.
