Abu Dhabi : The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has said it would support efforts of the international community for developing sustainable energy sources, WAM news agency reported Thursday.
“The UAE is well aware of the important role alternative fuels like hydrogen, ethanol and others will play in fuelling the global economy and mitigating impact of climate change,” Rashid Ahmed bin Fahad, minister of environment and water said Wednesday.
The minister was delivering his keynote address to the opening session of the Middle East Fuels Symposium 2008 Wednesday organized by the World Refining Association (WRA) here.
The two-day symposium would address issues facing the fuels sector and discuss latest developments in the field of fossil fuel and alternative sources of energy.
The minister said that safe and affordable alternative sources of energy should be developed.
“The UAE will definitely back any international effort to develop such types of fuels,” he said.
Fahad briefed the session on the UAE’s efforts to change over to renewable and sustainable energy technologies.
He said that Dubai Electricity and Water Authority plans to build a $6-billion hydrogen-based power generation station.
Similarly, the UAE-based Masdar Initiative plans to construct a hydrogen-based power generation project with carbon capture and storage facilities which would be the world’s largest of its kind, he said.
