Guangzhou (China) : Indian men’s team scored an emphatic 3-0 victory over Nigeria in the 33-36 play-off tie of the World Table Tennis Championship here Friday.
Soumyadeep Roy gave India a good start, defeating Nosiru Kazeem 12-10, 9-11, 11-9, 11-9 in the first match. Then, India’s top star Achanta Sharath Kamal doubled the lead thrashing Monday Meotohun 12-10, 14-12, 11-9.
Amalraj Anthony, who featured in the championships for the first time, clinched the tie for India with a hard fought victory over Hakeem Hassan 11-5, 6-11, 14-12, 8-11, 11-8 in the third match.
The Indians will next play Slovenia in the 33-34 play-off tie Saturday, while the women take on Australia in the 29-32 play-off.
