Brasilia : Struggling Brazilian football giants Vasco da Gama have pinned hopes on coach Romario to take them out of troubled waters in the new year, said the club’s vice president Jose Luis Moreira.

Moreira said that winning the national league will be the team’s priority for 2008 and added: “We always play to win. We are going to keep our base of players and are still looking to reinforce our roster. I believe that Romario’s experience will definitely help us to win the title. We are going to enter the tournament with the aspirations of winning the Carioca.”

The vice-president also said that the club is also looking to hire a forward for the new year.

According to reports, striker Alex Dias, who left the club with some hard feelings in the midst of the season in 2005, has been offered a contract by the team. Confirming it, the player’s agent Jose Rodriguez Coca said Dias was considering the offer.
