Algeria takes over OPEC presidency

Algiers : Algerian Energy and Mines Minister Chakib Khelil has taken over the presidency of the 13-member Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) for 2008.

Khelil, who succeeded United Arab Emirates Energy Minister Mohammed bin Dhaen Al Hamli as OPEC president, said he would focus on promoting dialogue between oil producing and consuming countries to ensure stability of the oil market, WAM news agency reported Wednesday.

Earlier, Khelil had said on various occasions that a meaningful dialogue with oil consuming countries was essential to hold the price line and bring stability in the world oil market.

This would help in preserving OPEC members’ revenues and secure energy supply to the world economies, the Algerian minister had said.
