In 1992, the cops – attached to the Local Arms Constabulary (LAC), the armed wing of city police – had escorted notorious gangster Bachchi Pandey on a visit to his relative when they “managed” his escape.

Pandey, a close associate of underworld don Chhota Rajan, had been arrested under the dreaded Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (TADA) act.

The eight cops are, Ganga Chavan, Sashikant Gaonkar, Madhukar Kadam, Shashikant Desai, Pandurang Mohite, Vilas Gurav and Baburao Deshmukh and Sugandha Gadge.

Deputy Commissioner of Police K.L. Prasanna said that action against the convicted cops – all of whom are under suspension – would be taken after getting the copy of the judgment.
