Srinagar : Kashmir experienced its coldest day of the season so far Wednesday as the minimum temperature here dropped to minus 7.4 degrees.
The weatherman, however, had some good news for the rain and snow starved valley.
“Today the minimum temperature dropped to minus 7.4 degrees Celsius making Wednesday the coldest day of the season so far.
“Dry and cold conditions because of clear skies are likely to continue for the next two days after which we can expect rain and snow in Kashmir. A western disturbance is likely to materialize,” T.K. Jotshi, the assistant director of the meteorological office here, told IANS.
Millions of people living here woke up Wednesday to find water taps frozen.
At a number of places people were seen lighting fires under the taps to melt the ice inside.
The famous Dal Lake in the city has already frozen around its edges.
“The Wullar and Mansbal lakes have also frozen at their peripheries,” Jotshi said.
Because of extremely slippery conditions at the Zojilla Pass, authorities closed the Srinagar-Kargil highway Wednesday.
