New Delhi : The government Wednesday reiterated that special economic zones (SEZs) that have already been “notified” were legal entities and there was no provision to scrap such projects.

Commerce Secretary G.K. Pillai said this while commenting on the Goa government’s decision to recommend withdrawal of permission to all such projects in the state.

“There is no provision under law to recommend de-notification of special economic zones,” Pillai said.

“They have no locus standi to withdraw the notifications to the SEZs,” Pillai told reporters, even as a panel headed by him cleared 28 more SEZs, of which 24 were given formal approvals.

He said the notified SEZs had also become legal entities.

“Notified means the state has no locus standi to withdraw anything,” he said and queried: “Duty-free equipment has also started coming in. How will the state compensate these developers?”
