Pakistan elections postponed till Feb 18

Islamabad, Jan 2 (IANS) Pakistan’s parliamentary elections have been postponed from Jan 8 to Feb 18 in the wake of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto’s assassination, it was announced Wednesday.

“The elections will be now held Feb 18 instead of Jan 8,” Chief Election Commissioner Qazi Muhammad Farooq announced at a crowded press conference here.

He said offices of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) across the country were destroyed in the violence that followed the Dec 27 killing of Bhutto in Rawalpindi.

Farooq said the decision to put off the polls was taken after consultations with provincial governments as well as election officials in provinces and districts.
