Most of thousands of ballot boxes destroyed in Sindh province

ISLAMABAD, JANUARY 04, SPA — Most of thousands of ballot boxes in eleven districts of Pakistan’s Sindh province were destroyed during the riots that followed the assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Secretary Kanwar Muhammad Dilshad told reporters.

The boxes were made by foreign companies, which now needed 28 days to supply replacements, he said.

Dilshad said expensive Photostat and fax machines, printers and telephones at the election offices in Sindh were damaged or taken away by miscreants and it would take time to make up for the loss.

Dilshad said that fixing the date of election is the constitutional right of the President, while rescheduling the election date is the constitutional right of the chief election commissioner.
