Kolkata : The family of Rizwanur Rehman, the Muslim youth who died under mysterious circumstances a few months ago, has refused to comment on a television channel report that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe has deemed his death as suicide.

A Bengali TV channel – Chobbis Ghanta (24 Hours) – quoting CBI sources said that Rizwanur had committed suicide. The report was aired Friday.

“We have discussed the matter with our lawyer Kalyan Banerjee and decided not to say anything regarding this issue till the CBI report is submitted before the Calcutta High Court Jan 8. But we want the people responsible for the death to get proper punishment according to the Indian Penal Code,” Rukbanur Rahman, elder brother of Rizwanur, told IANS.

The body of Rizwanur, 30-year-old graphic designer, was found beside a railway track in north Kolkata with his head smashed Sept 21, 2007 barely a month after his marriage to Priyanka Todi, the daughter of city-based industrialist Ashok Todi.

The TV report said the investigating agency has also framed abetment charges against four city police officers, including two Indian Police Service officials, who allegedly threatened and pressurised Rizwanur to stay away from Priyanka.

The investigating agency has reportedly found that the Todi family abetted Rizwanur to commit suicide and has framed charges against Ashok Todi and his brother Pradip Todi.

The CBI has also filed charges against Pappu, Rizwanur’s family friend, who had allegedly accepted bribe from the Todi brothers to separate the couple, the report said.
