US unemployment rate rises to 5 per cent

Washington, January 04 , SPA — The US unemployment rate rose to 5 per cent in December, the government said Friday, giving another indication of economic unease as the world’s largest economy enters the new year, according to dpa.

The figure compared to the 4.4 per cent unemployment in December
2006.Job growth in several service industries such as health care and
food services was offset by job losses in construction and manufacturing, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said.
