Another soldier was wounded and was transferred to a US military hospital, added the press release, which did not reveal names.

On January 2, a bomb exploded in southern Baghdad as a patrol was passing by, killing one US soldier, according to another report from the US Army.

Since the United States invaded Iraq in March 2003, 3,907 US troops have been killed and more than 28,600 have been wounded.

Statistics from the Department of Defense show that 2007 was the most lethal year for the US forces in almost five years of war, as more than 800 US soldiers were killed in Iraq.
