In a statement carried by the website of state television network IRIB the government said all schools and universities would also be closed on Monday and Tuesday as weather forecasts said the heavy snowfalls and minus temperatures were to continue.

The closure would however not include presidential and ministerial offices, banks and medical centres.

The heavy snowfalls had led to chaotic situations on Tehran streets on Sunday, causing several traffic accidents and disruptions of public transport.

All foreign and local flights at the two airports of IKA and Mehrabad were cancelled, both from and to Tehran. According to the latest reports, flights might resume at 0900 (0530 GMT) Monday.
