Mauritius PM arrives for a five-day India visit

New Delhi, Jan 7, IRNA ,Mauritius Prime Minister, Navinchandra Ramgoolam, who will be the chief guest for the sixth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, arrived in New Delhi Sunday for a five-day India visit.

The sixth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, a three-day annual conference of Indian Diaspora beginning in New Delhi on Monday.

India and Mauritius signed the double taxation avoidance agreement in 1983.

Despite periodic criticism that the treaty has been abused for tax evasion, New Delhi has refused to scrap the agreement, an ANI report said.

Mauritius has an emerging financial services sector, which includes more than 25,000 offshore companies.

Nearly 70 per cent of Mauritius population consists of Indian immigrants.

The island situated off the southeast coast of Africa celebrates its national day on March 12, as a tribute to India’s Father of Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, and Indian freedom struggle, which had greatly influenced its struggle for political and social rights.
