Jaipur : In the grip of a power crisis, Rajasthan government has decided Monday to impose power cuts in the state.
The closure of several power units in the state sector due to technical snags and low production in the central power stations has led to this situation.
The state is facing an estimated daily shortage of around 20 million units of power.
To tide over the crisis, the state government from Monday has imposed power cuts in both urban and rural areas.
“The power cuts in urban areas will range from 2-5 hours. Industrial units will receive power for 12 hours daily,” Energy Secretary Yaduvendra Mathur said.
However, no power cuts have been imposed on farmers.
“By imposing power cuts, we propose to fulfil the demands of farmers, who require it for their winter crop sowing,” officials of the energy department said.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje has now sought help from Chhattisgarh. Official sources said here that she spoke with her counterpart in that state to buy power during the Rabi cropping season.
The public sector power companies were also trying to get additional electricity from other states, the sources added.
