Jalandhar : The Jalandhar police are baffled with the discovery of Rs.3.7 million in cash from the bedroom of Kanya Maha Vidyalaya (KMV) college principal Rita Bawa, who was found murdered inside her residence on the college campus Sunday along with three other school employees.

Police officials investigating the murder of the 59-year-old principal stumbled on a suitcase containing the money. It is still not known to whom the money belongs.

“We are trying to probe whether she had received this money from a property deal or had brought it to pay for some property deal. What is surprising is that her killers did not touch the money at all,” an investigating official said.

The police have sent teams to Delhi and other places to probe different angles behind the murder.

Bawa, who headed the girls’ college in Punjab for the last few years, was found murdered in her room in the principal’s lodge. She had been attacked on the head with a blunt weapon and her throat had been slit.

Three other employees – two guards and a cook – were also found murdered near her residence. The police are probing the role of the dead cook.

They are also probing whether property and money was a cause of the murder. Family members and college staff told the police investigators that Bawa had made trips to Delhi in connection with purchase of some property. She was said to possess properties in Jalandhar and Delhi.

“The motive behind the murder was not theft. The killers were looking for some documents or CDs,” Jalandhar district police chief Arpit Shukla said.
