Brussels : European Union High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, Javier Solana, congratulated Monday the Georgian people “on the peaceful conduct of truly competitive presidential elections on 5 January.” But the EU foreign policy chief said in a statement that “as a matter of priority, the vote count should be concluded as soon as possible, and all allegations of irregularities should be properly investigated.” He called on all political forces to maintain a dialogue in order to deal with the challenges ahead, including those identified by international observers, before the parliamentary elections in the spring.
Meanwhile, Mikhail Saakashvili has been re-elected president of Georgia.
The countrys election commission said he won 52.8% of the vote, with most ballots counted.
The opposition is alleging that the vote was rigged and staged protests in the capital, Tbilisi.
