But he has told supporters that together they can still win the White House and change the world.

“I want to congratulate Senator Clinton on a hard-fought victory here in New Hampshire,” he told supporters, acknowledging his rival who beat him into second place.

“She did an outstanding job. Give her a big round of applause.” He said, “Whether we are rich or poor, black or white, Latino or Asian, and whether we hail from Iowa or New Hampshire, Nevada or South Carolina, we are ready to take this country in a fundamentally new direction. That is what is happening in America right now.” Admirers have likened Obama to former US leaders Bill Clinton and John F. Kennedy. In his historic bid to become the first black US president, it is clear the Illinois senator now faces a tough struggle ahead.
